Richard Penderel

Born Tong Shropshire, one of 5 catholic brothers. In 1651, following his father's beheading in 1649, Charles II was running from Cromwell's army. The Penderels disguised him and helped him on his way towards Wales to find his supporters there.
Following the Restoration Richard Penderel was rewarded by the king and would often visit him in London. It was on one of these visits that he died of a fever, while staying in the house of Henry Arundel in Great Turnstile, near the Ship Inn.
