Lieutenant John Richards Lapenotiere

Born in 1770 in Ilfracombe, Devon, to a Huguenot family.

As a Lieutenant in command of HM Schooner 'Pickle' he brought the news from the Battle of Trafalgar, landing at Falmouth, Cornwall on 4 November 1805 and then carried the news along the Trafalgar Way to the Admiralty in Whitehall.

When he retired from the Royal Navy he lived in Roseland House, Menheniot, near Liskeard in Cornwall, with his second wife Mary Ann Lapenotiere née Graves and his family. He died on 19 January 1834 from complications following a fall from a horse and is buried in the graveyard of the Parish Church of St Lalluwy, 7 East Road, Menheniot, Liskeard, PL14 3RR.
