Arthur Frederick Corking

Categories: Tragedy

Killed in the Moorgate tube disaster and shown incorrectly on the memorial in Finsbury Square, London, EC2 as 'CORKING, ALFRED'.

We originally listed him as Alfred Corking as this is how he is remembered on the memorial in Finsbury Square. In 2019: Via Facebook we were contacted by Corrine Reynolds: "This is my nan's brother, his name is actually Arthur!!" Worried that our transcription had caused the problem we checked, but the memorial definitely gives "Alfred". If Corrine wants to get this fixed we suggest she starts with TfL. Although they are not named on the memorial we'd expect they were involved in some way and would be able to help Corrine find the right people.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, subsequently researched the man.

Arthur Frederick Corking was born on 25 December 1922 the younger of the two children of Edward Corking (1899-1976) and Florence Louise Corking née Whitmore (1898-1988). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1923 in the Holborn Registration District, London. His elder sister was Doris Amy Corking (b.1920).

Electoral registers show his parents listed at 37 Imperial Avenue, London, N16 from 1923 to 1934 and at 179 Imperial Avenue, London, N16 from 1935.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he is shown as a single man and a commercial junior clerk living at 179 Imperial Avenue, London, N16, with his parents and his sister, whose occupation was described as 'commercial shorthand'. His father's occupation was recorded as a motor garage blacksmith.

Electoral registers from 1946 show him listed with his parents at 146 Sirdar Road, London, N22.

Our image was taken on 28 December 1950 when he married Eileen Mary McLaughlin (1920-2011) in St Eugene's Cathedral, Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Their daughter Louise M. Corking was born in 1952.

From 1952 to 1955 he and his wife were listed on the electoral registers at 97 Queen's Drive, London, N4 and from 1956 until his death at 206 Boundary Road, London, N22.

His death, aged 52 years, on 28 February 1975 was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1975 in the London City Registration District and probate records confirm that his address had been 206 Boundary Road, London, N22, but give the date of his death as 4 March 1975. Administration was granted on 18 July 1975 and his effects totalled £14,805. The date of 4 March 1975 is probably recorded as being the date that his death was certified. It took up to four days to complete the operation to recover all the bodies.
