Person

Soldier. At 14 years old, he managed to conceal his real age when he volunteered for the army. Men under the age of 18 were not allowed to join the army and had to be 19 to be sent on overseas service. He joined the East Surrey Regiment and fought at the Battle of the Somme, but was killed by shellfire whilst 'A' Company was holding the front line trenches near Guillemont.  He is buried in the Philosophe British War Cemetery on the outskirts of the nearby village of Mazingarbe.
