William Charles Copperthwaite

Engineer. 1906 Copperthwaite published "Tunnel shields and the use of compressed air in subaqueous works".

2021: We were kindly contacted by Christopher Nobbs (great-nephew of Copperthwaite) who wrote: "William Charles Copperthwaite (1861 – 1927) was the eldest son of Harold Copperthwaite (Engineer for the North Eastern Railway until 1899). He married Alice Holroyd, daughter of William Holroyd of Leeds."

Christopher has also provided some information to the NPG: Copperthwaite was the supervising Engineer for the LCC at the time (1909-16) that the Vauxhall Bridge was constructed.

Christopher's son Charlie sent us this photo of the portrait that the Nobbs family hold, by Sir Charles Holroyd (related to Alice) of Copperthwaite with the Vauxhall Bridge construction in the background.

Our thanks to Chris and Charlie for their generous assistance.
