Founded as part of the new hospital in Paddington. It merged with Imperial College in 1988 and again with the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1997. Notable alumni include Sir Alexander Fleming and Sir Roger Bannister.

The hospital's founder was Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. This hospital provides women-centred services including the right of a woman to be treated by a female doctor.

It was saved from demolition by the Hammersmith and Fulham Historic Buildings Group and was converted to offices.

This plaque was first erected at 7 Essex Street in 1962 and then re-erected here, at Essex Hall in 1964.
