St Mary Lambeth

Categories: Religion

A wooden church is recorded here in 1062. In the twelfth century a later stone church functioned as the church to the Archbishops' London lodgings next door, at Lambeth Palace.  Largely rebuilt 1851-2 by Philip Charles Hardwick. Deconsecrated in 1972 and slated for demolition, it was rescued for a new life as a Garden Museum which opened in 1977, the world's first museum of garden history. The churchyard was re-designed as a garden.

In 1972 the congregation united with Lambeth Mission and both now use Lambeth Chapel.
