The borough was formed in 1965 by the merging of the separate former boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea. It was originally planned to call it just Kensington, but Chelsea was added after local protests.
The vestries of Kensington and of Chelsea were precursors to this body.

Lord Mayor in 1967. Born Gloucestershire but brought up in Fulham. Left school aged 14 to work hard and go to college in the evenings. In the picture we think Bellinger is the man with the spade.
