Chemist. One of chief pioneers of physical organic chemistry. Born 142 Windsor Road, Forest Gate. Brought up on the Isle of Wight. Working in the Chemistry department, University College London, during the period 1930 - 1970, pioneered our understanding of the electronic basis of structure, mechanism and reactivity in organic chemistry, which is fundamental to modern-day chemistry.
