Michael Joseph Cunningham was born on 24 December 1961 in Forest Gate, London. He was one of the six children of Laurence Edward Cunningham (1929-2016) and Teresa Anastasia Cunningham née Smith (1929-1999). 

Married to his wife, Teresa, they lived in Princetown Junction, New Jersey, USA with their son, William Laurence Cunningham who was born at the end of August 2001. He was a negotiable securities broker for Euro Brokers and had moved to America twelve years earlier.

He died, aged 39 years, on 11 September 2001 having returned to work one day earlier than he needed to from paternity leave and was at the company's office on the 83rd floor of the South Tower, 2 World Trade Centre, Manhattan, New York, USA.
