Lord Richard Haldane

Politician and educationalist. Born Richard Burdon Haldane at 17 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh. Entered parliament in 1879. As Secretary of State for War, he founded the Territorial Army and made the plans for the mobilization of the army at the outbreak of war in 1914. He helped found the London School of Economics and was raised to the peerage in 1911. Lord Chancellor 1912-15 and 1924. Died at his home, Cloan, Auchterarder, Scotland.
