Socialist politician and campaigner. Born Nottinghamshire. Largely self-educated. Came to London as a young man. Joined the Labour party and the South Place Ethical Society (of which he later became President). Served in the LCC 1919-25. Entered Parliament in 1922. Entered the Lords in 1931 and there became the Labour Leader. Chairman of the LCC 1934-8.
