Dr Giles worked at the Centre for Polar Observation & Modelling, Department of Earth Sciences, University College London.  From her own website: "I am a NERC Postdoctoral Research Fellow and my research focuses on using satellites to better understand the physics of the ice covered polar oceans and how they are changing."

Aged 35, cycling to work on a Monday morning she was killed by a  tipper truck at 8.25am.  the driver was questioned by police at the scene but was not arrested.
