Warwick Farm Dairies

Categories: Commerce, Food & Drink

Retail group run by the Welford and Sons family. Founded by Richard Welford who opened his first dairy shop at 4 Warwick Place. It became the largest milk retailers in the capital, with customers including Queen Victoria. In the mid 1850s the business's own cows were moved to a farm in Wembley.

At its height, the business covered two acres at the Elgin/Shirland junction. A significant part of what was built in the 1880s is still there today. In 1915 it merged with United Dairies, which became part of Unigate in 1959. The Facebook page from which our picture is taken contains some fascinating period pictures.
