Cubitt Town School air raid

Inscription

{Beneath the AFS symbol:}
In memory of auxiliary firewomen Joan Fanny Bartlett and Violet Irene Pengelly who died on this site as a result of enemy action on the night of 18th/19th September 1940 when the school then in use as sub fire station 35U received a direct hit from a high-explosive bomb.
In memory also of 24 members of the ARP/Civil Defence Services who died with them.
{Followed by 24 names. See commemorated subjects:}

Site: Cubitt Town School air raid (1 memorial)

E14, Saunders Ness Road, St Luke's Primary School

There is some confusion regarding the schools in the Isle of Dogs: The streets they were on have changed names and schools have moved from one site to another, almost as if they are trying to avoid identification. We believe that at the time of the bombing this school was known as Cubitt Town School. See the Bartlett and Pengelly plaque for more details.
