Erection date: 23/10/1982

Inscription

This stone was laid by the Rt Hon George Thomas MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, 23 October 1982.

Site: Chelsea Methodist Church and a "club" (2 memorials)

SW3, Chelsea Manor Street

The Church plaque can be seen at the lower left of our photo. The club plaque is below the window to the left of the stepped entrance.

1913 map shows "Meth. Ch. (Wes.)" at the site of the Church plaque and an unnamed building, about half as wide but just as deep, at the site of the club plaque. The rest of Manor Street, down to what is now Chelsea Manor Gardens, is shown as cleared, waiting for development. At Layers of London an OS map (1940-60) shows a 'Methodist Church' and a 'Club'.

Both sites were developed in 1903 and the Library Time Machine has a 1901 photo of this section of street, taken from King's Road, with "demolition under way". The photo our our Manor Street Methodist Church page shows both these new buildings.
