Winifred Turner

Categories: Art

Sculptor. Born London, daughter of Alfred. From our Picture source, Sotherbys: "With her head turned and her legs elegantly crossed, Thought is carefully balanced in taut and balletic pose. ... Winifred Turner was a skilled dancer and had only been held back from professional training by her height. Jessica Turner recalled ... that her sister often modelled for her own sculptures, with the aid of a large mirror." We hope you agree that this justifies us using an image of this lovely sculpture to represent Winifred.

Studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. 1942 married Tom Paget but they had no offspring. Worked in her father's studio at 44 Munster Road until 1932, when she moved to Studio K, 416 Fulham Road (now Chelsea Studios). In 1940, when her father died, she moved to Etchingham, Sussex.
