Central School of Arts and Crafts

Categories: Art, Craft / Design, Education

Inspired by the School of Handicraft, this college, founded by William Lethaby, merged with St Martin's School of Art, founded in 1854, to form Central St Martins in 1989. Other colleges have merged in since then. Moved to King's Cross in 2011.

From the British Museum: "Founded by the London County Council in 1896; 1908, moved into purpose built premises in Southampton Row; 1966, renamed Central School of Art and Design; 1986, became part of the London Institute (art schools and specialist colleges adminstered by the Inner London Education Authority); 1989, merged with St Martin's School of Art to form Central Saint College of Art and Design; 2004, the London Institute renamed the University of Arts, London."
