Walter Hindes Godfrey was born on 2 August 1881, the eldest of six children of Walter Scott Godfrey and Gertrude Annie Godfrey née Rendall, His father was a Director of a Wine & Spirit Company and the family were living at 102 Greenwood Road, Dalston. The 1901 census shows the family had moved to 'Farleigh' Berlin Road, Catford, and his occupation was given as Architect's Assistant. (Berlin Road was renamed as Canadian Avenue in 1918).

In 1907 he married Gertrude Mary Warren in Lewisham and by the time of the 1911 census he was living with his wife and two daughters at at 'Kingsdown' 3 Watling Street, Radlett, Hertforfordshire. His occupation was recorded as an Architect. The 1939 England and Wales Register shows him and his family living at 32 High Street, Lewes, Sussex and his occupation was recorded as an Architect, F.R.I.B.A. In the 1950 Birthday Honours List he was awarded a C.B.E. as the Director of the National Buildings Record. He died on 16 September 1961 in the Acland Nursing Home, Oxford and his estate totalled £19,219-10s-6d.
