Actor and theatre manager. Born in Castle Street, Dublin (his birth year is approximate). He possibly performed as a strolling player and had arrived in London by 1691, where he quickly achieved success on the stage. In 1709, he joined with Colley Cibber and others in the management of the Haymarket and Drury Lane theatres. In 1715 he founded the Waterman's Guild rowing prize of Doggett's Coat and Badge in commemoration of the accession of King George I. Died in Eltham, Kent.
