He was a generous benefactor and in his lifetime gifted £40k to the Bolingbroke Hospital. Sir James and Lady Carmichael were closely involved with the hospital, donating the children's ward there, named for Ann Carmichael. In 1925 at the time of the building of the William Shepherd Memorial wing, he was Chairman of the hospital, or of its building committee (the plaque is not clear). In 1926 Lady Carmichael donated the nearby houses at 80 and 81 Bolingbroke Grove for use as nurses’ homes.

Lived at "Redclyffe", Ullathorne Road, Streatham. Died at his home in Kingston with an estate of £216k. In his will he left much of his estate to charitable organisations including the Congregational Chapel in Streatham. He also gifted sums to staff of his firm and his chauffeur.
