Born Bengal. Bangladeshi politician and statesman. Father of the Bangladeshi nation, popularly known as Bangabandhu (various spellings), Bengali for "Friend of Bengal".

First President of Bangladesh and Prime Minister, 1971 until his death. He and most of his family were assassinated by renegade army officers during a coup.
