Nicknamed 'fox' because of his ginger hair. He was aged 19. The Islington Gazette reported "... McCarthy was attacked in revenge for abducting and torturing {a drug dealer}...". 6 weeks after that event two of the drug dealer's associates murdered McCarthy. The murderers were both given life sentences.

Ghost Bikes provides a lot of info on James. He worked at Mosquito Bikes on Essex Road and was the inspiration for the original Ghost Cycle website in the UK.
Role on the lost expedition: Able seaman on SS Erebus. See John Franklin.
Drowned in the 1898 HMS Albion disaster, aged 33. Buried in grave 5 at the memorial in East London Cemetery.
