John Sparkes

John Sparkes

Principal of the Lambeth School of Arts 1858 - 1900. Born as John Charles Lewis Sparkes in Brixton. Began teaching at Lambeth in 1857. Cultivated a special relationship between the school and Doulton's neighbouring pottery works. Mutually beneficial to each organisation this resulted in a line of ‘art-pottery’, known as Doulton ware. Sparkes designed many of these items.

Headmaster and then Principal of the National Art Training School in South Kensington (later the Royal College of Art) 1875-98. Died Surrey. Mapping Sculpture and JSTOR are useful sources.
