Javed Sumbal

Categories: Cyclist, Tragedy

34 years old, Sumbal worked as a bike courier for Darwin's Deli in Barnardo Street, Shadwell. The inquest concluded that on his way to work at 8.20am he had miscalculated the time available to cross the Commercial Road and was crushed to death by a huge truck driven by a Dutch-registered driver.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has found the following: Javed Sumbal was born in 1978 in Lahore, Pakistan. He was an arts graduate, studying for an MBA, funding himself by working during the London Olympics in July and August 2012 as a security officer but he was better known as a bike courier for Darwin's Deli in Barnardo Street, Shadwell. He died on 6 December 2012 at 8.20am, whilst cycling on his way to work from his home in Clearbrook Way, Stepney. The inquest concluded that he had miscalculated the time available to cross the Commercial Road at the junction with Arbour Square, clipping the central paving kerb, losing control of his bike and was crushed to death, aged 34 years, by a huge truck driven by a Dutch-registered driver. His body was returned to Pakistan on 16 December 2012.
