We have found references to Henry Armriding as a member of the Ealing District Council in 1899, 1908 and 1919. He was Mayor of Ealing 1916-17.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that Henry Armriding was born in 1845, the son of James Armriding (1807-1892) and Susan Armriding née Wilks (1808-1869). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1845 in the Cheltenham Registration District, Gloucestershire. On 18 May 1845 he was baptised in Cheltenham Parish Church where in the baptismal register his family are shown to be living at 4 James's Square, Cheltenham and that his father was a shoe maker.

He was shown as aged 6 years and a scholar in the 1851 census and was living a 4 King Street, Cheltenham, with his parents and a female lodger. His father was a Post Office employee.

In the 1861 census he was described as aged 16 years and a pupil teacher residing at 43 Brunswick Street, Cheltenham, with his parents. His father was listed as a letter carrier.

On 7 July 1868 he married Frances Elizabeth Laurence (1847-1933) at St Mary's Church, Cheltenham, where in the marriage register he is shown as of full age, a bachelor and teacher residing in Ealing, Middlesex (now Greater London), whilst his wife was described as of full age and a spinster living in Cheltenham, the daughter of William Laurence, an auctioneer.

When the 1871 census was undertaken he was shown as aged 25 years and a certified teacher living at Clyde Cottage, St Mary's Road, Ealing, with his wife, their daughter Florence Elizabeth Armriding (1869-1945), together with a female general servant. His wife was described as a pianoforte teacher.

Electoral registers in 1875 show him listed at Netley Villas, Ealing.

The 1881 census lists him as a 'Schoolmaster L Board' , aged 36 years, living at 35 Frithville Gardens, Hammersmith, London, with his wife and their daughter, together with two boarders: a schoolmaster and a schoolmistress along with a female general servant. 

In the 1885 electoral registers he is listed as the occupier of a house called Leicester Villa, Ranelagh Road, Ealing.

He was described as a 46-year-old certified schoolteacher in the 1891 census, living at 55 Ranelagh Road, Ealing, with his wife, their two daughters: Florence Elizabeth Armriding and Winifred Laurence Armriding (1886-1958), together with a female domestic servant. His elder daughter was shown as a professional singer.

On 23 June 1900 his elder daughter, Florence Elizabeth Armriding married William Albert Hedges (1864-1938) at the Wesleyan Chapel, Windsor Road, Ealing.

When he completed his 1911 census return form he described himself as aged 66 years, a retired school teacher, still living in the 9 roomed property at 55 Ranelagh Road, Ealing, with his wife and younger daughter, Winifred.

Probate records confirm that the family address remained as Leicester Villa, 55 Ranelagh Road, Ealing, that his wife died on 15 September 1933 and that when probate was granted to her husband on 25 October 1933 her effects totalled £993-19s-4d. They also showed that he too died, aged 88 years, on 2 December 1933 at 4 Lammas Park Gardens, Ealing and that when probate was granted on 23 January 1934 to his son-in-law, William Albert Hedges, a commercial clerk, his effects totalled £722-3s-2d. His death was registered in the 4th quarter of 1933 in the Brentford Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London).

He was buried on 16 December 1933 in Plot K, Second Row, Grave 11C, in The Ealing and Old Brentford Cemetery (now called the South Ealing Cemetery), 28 Chilton Ave, London W5 4RU, in the same grave that his wife had been interred on 19 September 1933.

He is shown as 'H. ARMRIDING' on the Walpole Park opening memorial plaque at Walpole Park, Mattock Lane, London, W5 5EQ.
