All we can discover about Haines is contained in a video, title: St John Evangelist Islington Celebrating 150 Years Part 1 of 3. This shows a church service with 3 men officiating. The text reads (with misspellings corrected): "The parish priest at the time of the 150 years celebration was Fr George Haines and his brother, also a priest, with Cardinal Basil Hume. Fr George Haines was born in Islington, baptised in St John's church, and ordained priest on 21 July 1951, and spent well over 25 years as parish priest at St John the Evangelist - the exact years I do not know. Retired and few years later. Died on 7th February 2000."
In the video Hume is the priest at the centre but it's not clear which of the other two is George Haines, and which his brother.
Our colleague, Andrew Behan, researched this man following our publication and found an image of him on ancestry.co.uk and other information which adds to what we had previously found.
George Francis Haines was born on 29 November 1927, the fourth of the five children of Herbert Henry Haines (1893-1977) and Margaret Mary Haines née Colfer (1892-1939). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1928 in the Edmonton Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London).
His four siblings were: Bernard Dominic Haines (1922-1998); Mary Patricia Haines (1924-1918); Herbert Andrew Haines (1926-2004) and Margaret Angela Haines (1930-2014).
In the 1939 England and Wales Register his parents were shown to be residing at 175 Alexandra Park Road, Wood Green, Middlesex (now Greater London) and that his father was an insurance clerk. His mother died on 30 September 1939, the date the Register was compiled.
His death, aged 72 years, on 7 February 2000 was registered in February 2000 in the Watford Registration District, Hertfordshire.
Of his two brothers, Herbert Andrew Haines was the one who was ordained as a priest.
He is shown as 'Fr. George Haines' on the joint Haines and Marley plaque attached to St John the Evangelist Church, Duncan Terrace, London, N1.
