Henry Jerrold Randall Lane, CBE

Henry Jerrold Randall Lane was born on 29 April 1898.

He married Elizabeth Kathleen Coulborn (1905-1988) in the 1st quarter of 1926 in the South Manchester registration district, Lancashire. (See her entry for more information).

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he is shown as both a university lecturer in English & Italian and a law student, living with wife, who was listed as a 'law student (bar)', at 13 King's Bench Walk, Temple, London, EC4, the residence of Arthur Essex Edgeworth Reade (1902-1971) who was a barrister-at-law.

Electoral registers from 1946 onwards show him and his wife listed at 4 King's Bench Walk, Temple, London, whilst telephone directories in 1947 show him as a barrister-at-law at 1 Hare Court, Temple, London, EC4.

For services as legal advisor to the British Council he was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1963 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

He died, aged 77 years, on 16 August 1975, his death being registered in the Fulham registration district. Probate records confirm his address remained as 4 King's Bench Walk, Temple, London and that when probate was granted on 13 October 1975 his effects totalled £22,790.

He is commemorated as Randall Lane CBE on the plaque at Temple Church Garden, Middle Temple Lane, London, EC4.

Alamy have a photo showing him with his wife after attending her swearing-in ceremony at the House of Lords in 1960.
