Born Somerset.  Speaker of the House of Commons 1580-3, Attorney General, 1581-92, and Lord Chief Justice of England 1592 - 1607. Presided at the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1603 and of Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators in 1605.
