{On the front of the plinth:}
Charles James Napier, General.
Born MDCCLXXXII. {1782}
Died MDCCCLIII. {1853}

Erected by public subscription. The most numerous contributors being private soldiers.

Criticised at the time as the "worst piece of sculpture in England".
