Napoleon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph, Prince Imperial, Killed in Zululand, 1st June 1879

{Rear of monument:}
"I shall die with a sentiment of profound gratitude for Her Majesty the Queen of England, For all the royal family and for the country where I have received during eight years such cordial hospitality".
(Last testament of the prince)

In memory of the Prince Imperial and in sorrow at his death, this cross is erected by the dwellers at Chislehurst.

Ao. Di. instead of A.D. is very unusual. Fecit is Latin: 'he made it'.

The Prince had lived at nearby Camden Place. The bees on the front plaque refer to the emblem of Napoleon Bonaparte.
