Fountain

Henry Lofts

Inscription

{On a plaque on the north side of the basin:}
This fountain was erected by Henry Lofts in recognition of many happy years in Mount Street.
Sir Ernest George, R.A. Fecit. 1892

Henry Lofts erected this fountain without naming anyone he wished to commemorate so, unusually, he is, on our website at least, commemorating himself.

W1, Mount Street, St George's Gardens

A modern information board inside the entrance to the park states "The bronze drinking fountain of a rearing horse was designed by Sir Ernest George and Harold Peto in 1891 for Henry Lofts, an estate agent. Sir Ernest George was also designer of 104 - 111 Mount Street." Which is fine except for the "rearing horse" which seems to have galloped away, leaving no trace. Since our visit we have seen this horse described as "tiny" - we will go back for another look, with a magnifying glass.
