Site: Gable Cottages (1 memorial)

SE1, Sudrey Street, Gable Cottages

This plaque is on the central façade of this horseshoe shaped development of houses. Sudrey Street was previously names Little Suffolk Street.

From the Listing entry: "16 cottages. 1889. By Elijah Hoole. For the Revd T Bastow. ... Built along the lines of Octavia Hills pioneering ideas for working-class housing."

Ideal Homes have an engraving by Hoole which makes them look very grand. There we learn that "The Rev. Bastow owned the land but had no other connection with the area."
