William Caslon

Categories: Craft / Design

Caslon came from the West Midlands. Created the Caslon typeface, first used in 1726. Caslon Old Face was used for printing the American Declaration of Independence. Working in Aldersgate Caslon was the 'letter-founder' for John Wesley's Journal. He was succeeded by his son of the same name and the firm continued in the family, including his great-grandson, one way or another, until 1937.

Spitalfields Life has wonderful photos of the business from the early 1900s.
