Wally Fawkes

Categories: Music / songs

Countries: Canada

Cartoonist and clarinettist. Born in Vancouver, his family emigrated to Britain in 1931. During WW2 he started playing in jazz bands including George Webb's Dixielanders and Humphrey Lyttleton's band. He adopted the pen-name Trog, and his cartoon strip Flook first appeared in the Daily Mail in 1949 where it ran for 35 years. He continued working in various publications until failing eyesight caused him to retire.

This cartoon, showing Flook drawing Fawkes, comes from a full article by Adam Smith in the Comics Journal which includes an interview with Fawkes.
