Stanley Robert Stevens

Auxiliary fireman killed in the bomb attack on Henry Cavendish School, Balham.

Andrew Behan has kindly carried out further research: Auxiliary Fireman Stanley Robert Stevens was born on 25 October 1913 and his birth was registered in Wandsworth. He was the son and second of the two children of Robert Henry Stevens (1881-1954) and Daisy Harriet Stevens née Gates (1884-1978). The family lived at 57 Broomwood Road, London, SW11 and his father was a Dairyman's Assistant. The family, including his elder sister, Winifred Daisy Stevens (1911-1997), according to electoral registers remained at this address until 1932. These electoral registers show that from 1933 the family were living at 6 Morella Road, London, SW12, together with his maternal grandmother, Eliza Gates née Duckett (1857-1951) and maternal aunt, Ella Mildred Gates (1887-1971) and this was confirmed in the 1939 England and Wales Register. This register shows that he was a single man whose occupation was a Typographer and that his service number in the Auxiliary Fire Service was B/11540.

He died, aged 27 years, on 6 November 1940 as a result of enemy action at AFS Fire Station 86W, that was located in the Cavendish Road School, Balham. The school was rebuilt after the war following the bomb damage and is now the Henry Cavendish Primary School, Hydethorpe Road, Balham. He is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London and his name appears on the National Firefighters Memorial at the junction of Carter Lane and Sermon Lane, London, EC4.
