Born Dunfermline, Scotland as Joseph Noel Paton. Painter. He first achieved success as a book illustrator. His early paintings heavily featured fairies, but in due course he became influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1887 he was knighted and appointed as the queen’s ‘limner’ (portrait painter). Died Edinburgh.
