Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm

Categories: Sculpture

Countries: Austria

Born Vienna, educated England, granted English citizenship 1865. Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland (a member of the royal household in Scotland) 1881 - 1890. Best known for the head of Queen Victoria on British coinage and the huge statue of Achilles at Hyde Park Corner. Frequently commissioned by the royal family, he also taught Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria. There was a rumour at the time that they were lovers, not assuaged by her being at his house when he died suddenly, 76 Fulham Road. Our photograph shows him with Princess Louise, circa 1885.

Bursill also sculpted the allegorical statues on Holborn bridge and seems to be the same man who produced a book on hand shadows in 1851. See Speel for some more info on Bursill.
