Civil engineer. Born in Enfield. As chief engineer of the Metropolitan Board of Works he created the London main drainage system and the Embankment. Great-great grandfather of Sir Peter, the television producer behind 'Big Brother' and other such masterpieces of popular TV entertainment. Died at his home in Wimbledon.
