Sir John Lubbock

Banker, politician and scientific writer. Born at 29 Eaton Place. He went into his father's banking business at the age of 14 and became a partner in 1856. Entered parliament in 1870, and succeeded in passing several important bills, including the Bank Holidays and Shop Hours Acts and the Ancient Monuments Protection Act 1882. The scientific side of his life covered research into primitive man, and the habits of bees and ants. 1900 became Baron Avebury. Caroline's Miscellany has more info. Died at Kingsgate Castle, Broadstairs, Kent.
