Sir Harold Gillies

Pioneer plastic surgeon. Born Dunedin, New Zealand. Came to England as a student at Cambridge and qualified as a surgeon in 1910. The two world wars provided him with the inspiration (and the patients) for his pioneering work as a plastic surgeon. In 1946 he carried out the first sex realignment surgeries. Also a talented sportsman, playing golf for England, and an artist who exhibited and sold his work. Died at the London Clinic in Marylebone.
