Savoy Theatre

Categories: Theatre

The Savoy Theatre opened in 1881. Despite this date it is a delightful example of Art Deco, explained on the Savoy Theatre website as follows: The theatre closed on 3 June 1929 to be internally completely rebuilt to designs by Frank A Tugwell - the only part of the old theatre to remain were the main walls. The interior designs were by Basil Ionides. The theatre then reopened on 21 October the same year.

The first public building in the world to be lit throughout by electricity.  But see also the Adelphi Theatre.
