Rosalie Drury Snr.

Born Rosalie Sawyer on 11 March 1887 in Hoxton, the eldest of the eight children of William Vernon Sawyer (1863-1939) and Amelia Emma Sawyer née Cooksey (1864-1901). Her father was a Mattress Maker and Upholsterer. She was baptised on 1 January 1888 at St Mark's Church, Old Street, Shoreditch and the family were living at 46 Great Chart Street, Hoxton. The 1891 census shows her living with her family at 21 Block B, Peabody Buildings, Farringdon Lane, Clerkenwell. On 30 January 1993 she was enrolled in the Church Street Temporary School in Hackney and her home address was given as 107 Murray Street. She only attended this school for a few months and was removed on 28 April 1893. The 1901 census states that she was a 14 years old Book Folder/Binder, living with her family at 2 Penny Bank Buildings, Clerkenwell.

On 8 August 1909 she married Francis Hubert Drury (1882-1947) at the Parish Church of St John, Clerkenwell. Her address was shown as 3 Penny Bank Chambers and his address was 8 Benjamin Street. The 1911 census shows them living at 8 Benjamin Street, Clerkenwell and that her husband was an armourer and metalworker in the theatrical industry. On 27 August 1913 their daughter, Rosalie Drury (1913-2003) was born. The 1939 England and Wales Register confirms that she was still living at 8 Benjamin Street with her husband whose occupation was shown as an Armourer, Tower of London, Leading Repairer of Antique Arms and Armour together with their daughter whose occupation was a Gold Embroideress. Her husband died on 2 January 1947 and electoral registers from 1948 to 1961 show her and her daughter at 8 Benjamin Street.

The premises were demolished and electoral registers for 1962 and 1964 show them both at 61 Corporation Buildings, Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell. These buildings were demolished in 1970 and according to a family tree on ancestry.co.uk she died in 23 Charles Townsend House, Finsbury Estate, London, EC1. This being the case telephone directories show an R. Drury at this address from 1975. She died aged 94 years on 21 January 1982 and was buried in Greenwich on 29 January 1982.
