Old Mercers’ Club

Categories: Community / Clubs

From Old Mercers' Club: "The Club was formed as the Mercers’ School Old Boys Association ... in 1904 and grew out of the Old Mercers’ Football Club which had been formed in 1901. ... The first annual dinner was held in November 1905 at the Holborn Restaurant. The Association’s cumbersome title was a constant cause of dissatisfaction and at the Annual General Meeting in October 1907 the name was changed to the Old Mercers’ Club."

This photo is from that website and is an extract from a very long photo which shows all the pupils who were at the school when its closure was announced in 1958. What's interesting to us is the decorative architrave behind the boys.  We recognise it as the one which now frames the slate plaque in the courtyard of Barnard's Inn, though either it has been moved since the photo, or many of the buildings around have changed.
