Newman Hall

Non-conformist minister and hymn writer. Born Maidstone, Kent as Christopher Newman Hall. 1854 became minister of Surrey Chapel. Promoted the abolition of slavery and in 1867 visited North America, making friends whose funding assisted him to move his congregation to a new church in 1876, Christ Church on Westminster Bridge Road. His first marriage ended in an acrimonious divorce. Died at Vine House, Hampstead Square.
