National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies

Founded by the merger of the National Central Society for Women's Suffrage and the Central Committee of the National Society for Women's Suffrage. These were the suffragists, who used legal campaigning methods unlike the more extreme suffragettes. Millicent Fawcett was the organisation's president for more than twenty years and described the group 'like a glacier; slow moving but unstoppable'.

Following the 1918 change in the law that finally gave some women the right to vote this organisation was renamed the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship and continued under the leadership of Eleanor Rathbone.

Based at 22 Great Smith Street (with the plaque) 1910-18.
