Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, OM, GBE, CVO, FRCA, FBA, FKC

Categories: Benefactor, Commerce

Investment banker. We cannot find any specific connection between Lord Rothschild and Laurence Olivier, upon whose statue his name as a benefactor appears.

We asked our colleague, Andrew Behan, to trace and connect the other members of the Rothschild family whose names are featured on plaques on the London Remembers website. This page brings them all together and shows how they are connected.

Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild was born on 29 April 1936, the son of Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, GBE, GM, FRS (1910-1990) and Barbara Judith Rothschild née Hutchinson (1911-1989). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1936 in the Cambridge registration district. His Wikipedia page gives much information about his life and confirms that he died, aged 87 years, on 26 February 2024.

His paternal grandfather was Nathaniel Charles Rothschild (1877-1923) who was a son of Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild,1st Baron Rothschild (1840-1915) and Emma Louise Rothschild née von Rothschild (1844–1935), a double first cousin (i.e. they shared both sets of grandparents). Nathaniel Charles Rothschild predeceased his older brother Lionel Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, GCVO, PC (1868–1937), who died without issue. The peerage therefore passed to Nathaniel Charles Rothschild's son Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild.

Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild was the third child and eldest son of an Austrian Baron, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808–1879) and Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild née von Rothschild (1819-1884). His siblings were Leonora De Rothschild (1837-1911), Evelina Gertrude de Rothschild (1839-1866), Alfred Charles de Rothschild (1842-1918) and Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917).

Evelina Gertrude de Rothschild married Baron Ferdinand James Anselm von Rothschild in 1865.

Edmund Leopold de Rothschild (1916-2009) was a grandson of Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917).
