Mrs Margaret Isobel Turner

Margaret Isobel Scott was born on 21 May 1861 in Bombay (now called Mumbai), India, the youngest of the three children of Henry Scott (1827-1862) and Margaret Scott Lang (1838-1915). Her two brothers were Henry Scott (1857-1930) and Basil Scott (1859-1926).

In the 1871 census she was shown as aged 9 years, a scholar, living at 8 Hyde Park Street, Paddington, with her widowed mother, her brother Basil, together with a butler, a housekeeper, a lady's maid and a housemaid. Her mother showed herself as living on dividends.

On 4 December 1888 she married Edward Beadon Turner (1854-1931) at St Michael and All Angels Church, Star Street, Paddington, where in the marriage register she was recorded as aged 27 years, a spinster residing at 8 Hyde Park Street, the daughter of Henry Scott, a deceased merchant, whilst her husband was shown as aged 34 years, a bachelor and physician living at 9 Sussex Gardens, Hyde Park. They were to have four daughters: Margaret Grace Turner (1889-1963), Beatrice Ethel Turner O.B.E (1891-1964), Isobel Agnes Turner M.B.E. (1892-1971) and Norah Mary Turner L.R.A.M. (1893-1983).

In the 1891 census she is described as aged 29 years, residing at 9 Sussex Gardens, Paddington, with her husband, their two elder daughters, together with a butler, a cook, a nurse, a housemaid and a nursemaid. Her husband was described as a duly registered physician. She was still living at the same address in the 1901 census with her husband and their four daughters, together with a cook, a parlour-maid, a housemaid, a kitchen-maid and children's maid. Her husband was listed as a physician.

When her husband completed his 1911 census return form he confirmed he was a physician living in a 17 roomed house at 31 Sussex Gardens, with his wife, their four daughters, together with a cook, a parlour-maid, a housemaid, a lady's maid and a between-maid.

Electoral registers from 1914 show her husband listed at 21 Westbourne Terrace, Hyde Park and from 1918 to 1931 she too appears on the registers at this address. Her husband died on 30 June 1931 and she was granted probate on his estate on 14 August 1931, his effects totalling £1,104-10s-4d. The 1939 England and Wales Register lists her at Little Shardeloes, High Street, Amersham, Buckinghamshire showing her as having no occupation.

Her death, aged 85 years, was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1946 in the Amersham registration district, Buckinghamshire. Probate records confirm that her address had been Willow House, High Street, Amersham, Buckinghamshire and that she died on 20 June 1946. Probate was granted to two of her spinster daughters, Margaret Grace Turner and Beatrice Ethel Turner. Her effects totalled £12,759-4s-6d.
