Madge Gill

Categories: Art, Paranormal

Countries: Canada

Artist. Born in a flat at the site of the plaque as Maude Ethel Eades. Being illegitimate she was an embarrassment to her family, who sent her to a Dr Barnado's orphanage. She later went to Canada as part of a scheme offering youngsters a fresh start in life. At the age of eighteen she returned to Britain, where she became heavily involved in spiritualism and astrology. It wasn't until she was 38 that her interest in art began, and she believed her work was inspired by a spirit guide.

The Waltham Forest Echo has more details of her life.

An 'outside artist', she created thousands of densely wrought, kaleidoscopic, pen and ink drawings. Henry Boxer Gallery has a good selection.
