Home Guard (County of London)

Categories: Armed Forces

British civilian voluntary militia in WW2. It was formed of men who were ineligible for active war service. This included those who were too young or old to be conscripted, plus men in 'reserved occupations' such as teachers, doctors and farmers.

Initially they were required to observe any airborne or seaborne invading enemy forces and to report back to general headquarters. During the Blitz they were given the duty of seeking out and guarding unexploded bombs. From 1942 they manned coastal artillery and anti-aircraft gun and rocket batteries.

They were famously portrayed in the television series 'Dad's Army'.
